What is Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)?
Household hazardous waste is products that can be an environmental or health hazard when stored or disposed of improperly. A product or substance is hazardous when it contains one or more of the following properties:

  • Corrosive/Caustic (Example: drain cleaner)
  • Reactive (Example: ether)
  • Flammable (Example: gasoline)
  • Toxic/Poisonous (Example: pesticides)
Reading the labels on products can help identify some potentially harmful substances. Check for words such as “Caution,” “Warning,” or “Danger.” These may indicate a product is a household hazardous waste. The Blue Earth County Regional Household Hazardous Waste Facility will accept HHW items at no charge.

The Product Reuse Center is located at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility, and is open the same hours as the Facility. Good, useable products, such as paint, that are brought to the Facility are screened, and put on the shelves in the Product Reuse Center. These materials are available free of charge for anyone visiting the Product Reuse Center on a first-come, first-serve basis. Materials cannot be saved or reserved. Products available change depending on what is brought to the Facility, so check in often!

Who may Use the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Facility?
Residents of Blue Earth, Nicollet, LeSueur and Sibley counties may use the Facility to dispose of hazardous wastes from their homes. The Facility operates with a permit granted by the State of Minnesota. This permit does not allow business waste of any kind to be accepted into this program.

Before you buy hazardous products, ask yourself:

Do I really need this product?

Is there a safer alternative?

Am I buying more than I need?

Can I safely store this product at home?

Is this product available in a non-aerosol form?

Business Waste
Some types and quantities of waste may be accepted through the Very Small Quantity Generator (VSQG) Program for a small fee. Call Blue Earth County Environmental Services for more information at (507) 304-4381.

Agricultural Waste

Blue Earth County residents seeking information on how to dispose of pesticides or pesticide containers, should call Environmental Services at 507-304-4381.  If you live outside of Blue Earth County, contact the county where you reside.
